Calling a trans person by their previous, usually birth-assigned name without their consent — known as deadnaming — disregards their identity and wishes.
It is never appropriate to disclose a trans person’s former name without their consent!
Using someone’s old name without permission violates their privacy and disrespects their identity. Such behaviour not only causes harm but can also compromise the interviewee’s safety after publication and make them vulnerable to hate speech or hate crimes.
If you accidentally use someone’s former name, apologize and, if possible, correct the mistake promptly (for example, in online articles).
